Terry Moore – Strangers With Pasts Worth Re-Telling
The final issue of Strangers in Paradise is lovely, and I recommend it. Terry’s next projects include working on the comic series ‘Spider-man Loves Mary Jane’ and another Marvel title. I previously featured a cover from the ‘Spider-man Loves Mary Jane’ series in a previous post:
What I have loved about Terry Moore’s artwork for a long time is that he regularly takes us out of the sequential world and inserts illustrations that are revealing character studies, both of the character and of Terry Moore. As the door closes for now on Strangers in Paradise (although look for full series compilations and color volumes to come), I’d like to share some of Terry Moore’s artistry that transcends the confines normally associated with ‘comic book art’:

Terry must have thought for years about what the final words and images would be for his series. After reading and viewing them, I inferred he may have been suggesting we had watched Francine and Katchoo’s story long enough, and he was encouraging each of his readers to go create their own amazing stories.

I was fortunate enough to discover SiP when it first hit the racks back in ‘93, and for its entire run, it was the “save the best for last” book of my weekly readings (the spot is now occupied by “Fables”, a Vertigo/DC comic written by Bill Willingham, another writer who has played with boundaries and perceptions) right up to the end. I have rarely seen characters more complex, more developed, more Understood by the author than these, and if a dance of souls catches your breath and lightens your step, then read this series. It will make you laugh And it will make you cry, and at the end, it will try to do both at the same time.
Like it did with me.
