Randy Pausch Medical Update, A Kind Jane’s Guide Review, and Tomorrow’s Oprah is about Polygamy in America

Randy Pausch

I did a post recently on Randy Pausch, who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.  The post can be read here.

Here is a medical update of his efforts to overcome his cancers, from his website which can be found here:

“On Oct 1st, I had a CT-scan, and a follow-up PET-CT scan on Oct 13th. Both confirmed that we are willing:  The tumors in my spleen are now gone, and the dozen or so tumors in my liver are all either stable or slightly smaller.

This happens in something like 15% of the cases of people who get gemcitabine+tarceva. It’s a lottery, and I’m a winner.  Statistically, this means I probably just bought an extra 2-4 months of good health.  Said another way, I may have just doubled my life expectancy - you try to do that!

Most importantly, that buys me time to pursue “plan B” - the gemcitabine+tarceva will not last forever, and we want to have the next thing cued up and ready to go.

I am currently looking into other chemotherapies, some vaccination approaches (including a custom vaccine that would be made from my own cancer cells), and some super-secret stuff I’m not at liberty to talk about.  But it is safe to say that I am thrilled with the quality of medical care I’m receiving and that I feel like I’m getting the cutting edge stuff that my species can provide for me.

Having said that, “winning” means buying time;  I will always hold out hope that a miracle cure is developed that would give me a normal life span, but right now we’re fighting to stay alive a few more months at a time.,

My quality of life is very good: I ride my bike an hour a day, play as much as I want with my kids, and enjoy being married to the most wonderful woman in the world. I have interimittant gut pain, some fatigue, and some mild “flu like symptoms” each week, approximately 24-72 hours after the chemo, but it’s manageable. Small price to pay for walking around.”

I appreciate that Randy, as he has done so often and so broadly before, is using coordinations of the best technologies to solve the problems in front of him.   And he is also sharing the best ideas and methods he has encountered so others may benefit also.

Jane’s Guide Review

I received this very kind review from Janesguide.com:

“The nameless blogger who writes the Sexuality in Art blog updates several times a week with entries that focus on our favorite three-letter word as it is portrayed in movies, photography, music, paintings and other media.  One week’s worth of entries might include images from decades-old comic books, current art exhibitions and independent movies.  Each entry contains musing by the blog’s author on how that particular piece of artwork fits into current or past artistic trends.  The beautiful images and interesting thoughts from the author will give readers plenty to consider.  - AAG “

Tomorrow’s Oprah is about different ways polygamy is practiced in the United States, and debates about decriminalizing polygamy.  If you’d like a preview of the show, it can be viewed here.

    Dear Randy,

I wish you the best, my husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer last November, 2006 . He is in stage 1, PSA of 10, gleason reading of 6 and considered to be the earliest stage of prostate cancer. All radiological reports were normal.I studied all about this problem and I came to the point where I said I will take care of it. I listened to those who undergo breast cancer and the cancer came back inspite of chemo. Others said do not let him undergo any kinds of treatments instead go on natural foods and changes entirely his eating habits. I started him by juicing 8 oz of carrots with beets, one tablespoonful of flaxseed and one tablespoonful of Barleans Greens. He drinks this 3 times a day religously on an empty stomach. In a month and a half his PSA went down to 2.2 and continous until October, 2007 it went up to 3.4 only because I stopped the greens because of his gout attack. His last biopsy report last November, 2007 was still with 2 positive Adenocarcinoma out of 12 samples taken from his prostate gland. I was not dissapointed but I believed his cancer will be cured. He is under the care of Moffit cancer Center and being monitored. I went back to juicing this time aggressively with all organic fresh veggies and fresh fruits for smoothies. He was not eating meat for a long time but he eats chicken but I stopped that now. Also, I took out the fresh veggies that can triggers his gout attach. I blended all diff kinds of veggies including garlic and seperately I juice carrots, ginger, celery, pamigranade and beets. Then , on his 8 oz of his juice I add one tabelspoonful of concentrated cherry tart. DOn’t forget I smoothies fresh fruits 3 to 4 tiems a week. He only eat fish, cooked foods with veggies, eat oat meal, grits and times bread and crackers. He treat himself sometimes with Pancakes with blueberries on top and pastas. I lestened his sugar intakes. Most importantly he drink green tea brand name Sencha. This was recommended by Moffit to add on his diet.ds. Last January, 2008 his PSA went down to 1.0. And he continous to go and see his doctor at Moffit Cancer Center. He also take one capsule of RM-10. So please if you can try taking all these natural foods and those ingredients I have mentioned above that boost your immune system and kill your cancer by not allowing them to eat nothing because they can only MEAT and SUGAR. They can’t stand the antioxidant that those greens have especially the KALE. Please read the book JUICING by Dr. Micahel T. Murray. Please also check RM-10, hacres.com, johanna budwig, dr.day, barleans greens, and flaxseed,

    God bless,

    Dear Randy and Family,

I think about you almost daily and pray for you all. What a beautiful family you are and such a great inspiration to so many of us. I hope one day your book becomes required reading in all high schools as there could be no better gift to the future generations.

    God Bless,

I dont know you, but I make it a point to check your medical up-date every week. I keep praying to God, “Please God, show me a miracle, please hold Randy in your arms and squeeze all the bad cells out of him and make him whole again. I would love to see him watch his children graduate and even walk his daughter down the isle. I know I’m asking a lot, but I know you can deliver”. Randy, hang in there, I know it’s hard, but you can overcome with your medication and positive thoughts. I’ve went through a major medical
issue two years ago - my son graduates in May, 2009, and I know God will get me through it.
