Forrest Gump – Good Is As Good Does

“Good is as good does.”

The sentence came to me in my dream as I was waking up this morning.  I had never heard the phrase before, but I’m not the first person to think up this alteration of the famous Forrest Gump quote.

Sometimes we don’t get to choose how much our past and our present hurts us.  But we often get to choose whether or not we work to prevent others from experiencing as much pain.

We can respond to pain by allowing it to continue or to be our focus.  We can allow it to freeze up or to slow our actions or our activism.  Or we can respond to painful stimilus by channeling our efforts into using our ideas, actions, and technologies to work to prevent or reduce how others experience similar pains.

If stupid is as stupid does, then maybe good is as good does.

Maybe “good” is not an inherent quality anymore than “evil.”

Maybe “good” is a choice.

Maybe “good” is often sincerely attempting to do “good” actions.

And maybe “good” is sometimes determined by evaluating the quality and effectiveness of actions done and being done.

Forrest Gump:  Mama, what’s my destiny?
Mrs. Gump:  You’re gonna have to figure that out for yourself.
