José Ladrönn’s The Spirit Covers – A Sober Hero Fighting Losing Battles

Few modern illustrators, in any medium, comparably tell as much of a story as José Ladrönn tells in his covers. Ladrönn’s version of Will Eisner’s hero “The Spirit” is not a standard super-powered hero.
Ladrönn’s “Spirit” is messy, getting his hands dirtied and bloodied in pursuit of justice.
Ladrönn’s “Spirit” doesn’t get the girl. The femme fatale usually takes advantage of him.
Ladrönn’s “Spirit” is always behind the ball, at a disadvantage at the beginning of all of his conflicts.
Ladrönn’s “Spirit” takes on fights he knows he will not likely win. He takes on lost causes. He knows he’s not only going to lose the battle, but also the war. Yet he chooses to fight anyway.
Ladrönn’s “Spirit” allows his empathy to get the best of him. His empathy gets him into trouble, taking him places no reasonable hero would investigate.
Ladrönn’s “Spirit” still believes the world could use some heroes, individuals willing to wear masks in order to hide their identities – not because they’re ashamed of what they do, but rather because they’re able to get more done by keeping their identities concealed.
Ladrönn’s “Spirit” knows the odds are against him. He knows all he has is the strength of one person . . . strength that will often not be enough.
Ladrönn has created one of the most narrative series of comic book covers of the last couple years. A reader doesn’t need to open the book to understand the hero’s approaching conflict. With Ladrönn, you can judge a book by its cover. And the cover alone is worth the price of the book.
Ladrönn’s artistry is genuinely and intricately interested in defining: What does it mean to be a hero? Some people these days neither want nor hope for heroes. I don’t understand that sentiment. The world needs ordinary individuals who are willing to take a sober look at things and still choose to fight “losing battles.” The world still needs Ladrönn’s kind of heroes.
Ladrönn’s artworks find an intelligent balance, mixing in the inherent humor that comes when any one person tries to create a solution to a problem that is larger than any one person can solve.
Ladrönn is a coveted cover artist, having done exceptional work for Elephantmen, Green Arrow, Batman, and more. His professionalism and craftsmanship are exquisite. It is a daunting task for any artist to look at a white, blank canvas and to courageously try to imbue and inhabit it with chemical life and enduring ideas. To take on such a difficult task regularly and consistently is heroic.
